LENA USALA
When designing a piece of outside furniture for a school for children with special needs, extra caution is essential. The design was kept clear and simple: a horizontal slab, divided by vertical cylindrical supporting elements into different types of sitting areas.
The choice is up to the teenager: enjoy a sensory-low moment inside the half cylinder or sit together on the free-form bench on the other side. A prototype out of concrete was made in which the outside of the cylinder got a ribbed finish, to contrast the sensory-free inside and to emphasis the verticality of this supporting element. The prototype has been installed on the playground of Het Spectrum.
